Southampton Memories
Darren sent me this picture from the past . A 190-29, and although I did not supply it it makes me feel good that I did sell them their first Maggie.  There's 16 tonners in the background. When they no longer were available they took the obvious route ( to me ) and went MAN. But thats another story !

Heres some Old ones from Kaarlo who lives in Lahti, Finland. Kaarlo's dad Niilo drove Maggies for 26 years. He started on the Mercur 4x4 126hp in 1959 and graduated in 1964 to a Saturn 4x4 in 1964.

There is no pic of the Saturn, but after that at the top, was the Jupiter 6x4 200hp in 1970. Then came the New shaped Hauber 232D22 6x4 in 1973. Finally he was the happy driver of a 256 D26K 6x4 from

1981 up until 1985. Niilo certainly saw some changes in his driving life. Thank you Kaarlo.

UPDATED 040310...

Chris was in the RAF as a driver of a mobile photo-processing unit. The unit was built into a specialist trailer by Von Lienen. They were in use in the early '60's and based at Wildenrath. He sent these pictures of the RAF Maggies, asking if there are still any around ? Chris remembers the amazing performance of the trucks, when unhitched, he reckons they would get up to 60 mph in 9 seconds. They served the RAF well in the extreme German winters. They seem to be All Wheel Drive, and have had a lasting effect on Chris.
Thank you to Thomas In germany for providing further information.

The two in the picture above are model A3500 with the F4L514 4 cylinder in line Deutz engine, but the ones in the top picture are models A4500/6 and are fitted with a V6 F6L614 unit.

I understand that similar vehicles were also supplied to the French army.

Deutz on The Dirt Track

This amazing picture was sent to me by Jim from Australia. It was taken in 1975 whilst he was travelling as a passenger in a Kenworth heading in the opposite direction. It was Jims first trip in a big truck as he had just started work as a Service Rep for KW. The picture was taken on a 35mm camera, has been scanned, sent halfway round the world and tarted up a bit by myself. I think it was worth the effort. Thanks Jim for taking the time to send this little piece of history.

Jens used to be the proud owner of this smart 232D16AK.

It was an Ex Norwegian Military spec Gun Tractor and has spent many years in underground storage.

Many hours , much money and paint were used to return this low mileage vehicle to its original condition.

The vehicle features a very unusual front bumper and lighting arrangement which was presumably part of the military spec, together with the array of roof lights.

The low level picture of the front axle setup shows very clearly the heavy duty components which made this model popular with many miltary organisations.

The remarkable front wheel drive and steering 'rose joints' are clearly visible.

Jens and his wife travelled extensively in this vehicle before selling it in 2007.

Maybe the New owner will see this and get in touch ?

Mukhtar Ahmed who lives in Rwanda is a third generation Maggie fan in the White truck at the top. It is a 1995 170D16 (Ex UNICEF water project) 4x4 Dropside with a BF6L913 engine. Apparently UNICEF found this truck was capable of the job after MAN, Mercedes and Scania had failed !

Mukhtar uses the truck for all kind of purposes accessing the most unaccessible land in the Congo region.

The Blue truck was owned by his Father in 1984, who drove the Orange one from 1976-82.

Both are fitted with cranes and the Blue vehicle was used for moving fuel tanks during the establishment of a network of Shell petrol stations.

Both the bottom two trucks were stolen during the 1994 genocide and are now working in the Congo.

Mukhtar's grandfather also drove a Maggie in 1965, but there are no pictures.

What do you get if you take an old Magirus Deutz bus, many hours work and some imagination ?

Erik in Argentina owns the old Magirus Deutz bus above and told me, some time ago that he was going to convert it to a prime mover. I could not really think this was possible until I saw the picture above which shows how its done. This ingenious conversion was carried out by another owner, on another similar bus, while Erik got sidetracked into repowering his FIAT 673 with a BF6L913 Deutz engine.

Now Erik can turn his skills to converting his bus .

Gary used to travel all over Europe with his Dad in his profession as a driver for the large fleet of Maggies operated by Cawthorn and Sinclair in the'70s and '80s. They became specialists in the transportation of the enormous Caterpillar tipper bodies. Their smart hard working trucks were a common sight on the roads of Europe. Please note these pictures are scanned from old prints.

Melvyn has just retired after 35 years service with Devon County Council. He spent many Winters been driving D26AK6x6 vehicles fitted with Atkinson, Econ and Schmidt equipment. These three vehicles have been responsible for Snow clearance and gritting for 10 years in this region. They were removed from service in 1998, but Melvyn has not forgotten his 'many cold, but happy hours' in them.

John has sent this photo taken photo taken around 1974 in Slough high st.

He was delivering this long load of roof sections for the Queensmere shopping centre on the trombone trailer outfit owned by the Iver Heath transport operator.

Alan in Glasgow has sent this picture showing 1 of 4 x D30 tippers owned by Morrison Quarries in 1980.

This one is in Balnagown Quarry. The dropside bodies allowed them to also move building materials and plant. These and two D30 mixer trucks performed well until 1990. Alan's father was the driver of one of the Maggies.

This artistic picture was sent by Charlie who worked for William Griffith in Whitburn. In 1974 they bought 8 x D30 tippers for use on the M8 contract. He remembers

them well and says they were good performers.

I found this picture on the net somewhere. It shows a beautifully restored Jupiter in Australia. I believe there are not many Maggies over there, which is surprising considering their suitability to the terrain and climate.

Harry in The Netherlands has his own transport company operating 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 Mercedes and Ginaf.

He sent these colourful old pictures of vehicles which were operated by his father from 1967-77.

The changes in IVECO prevent Harry following his father's choice of manufacturer of all wheel drive trucks.

When I cropped the left picture I had to leave in the Ford Anglia, as that was the first car I owned.

Alvaro learnt to drive in this truck.

Alvaro in Punta Arenas, Chile has sent this nostalgic picture of his Dad stood with his 1961 Jupiter. It is pictured outside a Texaco Plant in Santiago. He regularly made trips across the Atacama desert to become an accredited 'Million km Maggie Driver'.

This picture also came from Alvaro, and shows a 1929 Magirus Fire Engine which still turns out regularly for parades to represent the fire brigade of the Magallanes, based in the capital city of the region, Punta Arenas.

These pictures have been sent to me by a customer of mine from the'70s. Richard and his wife Angela both drove Maggies in their aptly named company R&A Freight. For a few years they seemed to spend more time on the european mainland than in the uk.     'MouseOver' the pictures for more detail.
