maggies work

This is the latest page, which is exclusively reserved for those Magirus Deutz trucks which are still working on a regular basis. Click on some of the small pictures to see enlargements.

Model : Orion 250D17      Build Year : 1966     Contact : Achim       Location :  Germany   de

Achim is the owner of this Rare Orion Aircraft Tug. Power is from a Deutz F12L614 15966cc motor developing 250HP. It is geared to pull a house down (No, probably a very large building) with a maximum speed of around 38kph. Empty weight: 16 tons, Towing capacity: 150 tons. This particular one was used by the German Air Force, but now is only taken out for Classic Vehicle Meetings. It must sound amazing !

Model : 220D32FK    Build Year : Unknown. Ex-Military use     Contact : Nahed       Location :  Greece

Nahed sent me this picture of some very hard working vehicles in Greece. The model numbers are not certain as they appear to be a bit of a mixture. I am told they have F10L413L engines, and can only assume they are 4 axle tippers. I say this because I am told that they regularly carry 40-55 tonnes ! of Rock and Aggregate in a Quarry and on public roads. They are working in areas up to 50 deg C. and have been fitted with Air Conditioning.

Nahed goes on to say 'Just for comparison,  a few years ago we bought a similar number of brand new Chinese trucks of higher HP models 2007 and used these in exactly the same conditions and in the same manner.  We had serious breakdown with these ( body and engine) and had to make extensive repairs including major engine repairs. The units performed extremely well under very aggressive conditions and some are still being used now. ' More proof that Maggies can do it anywhere.

Model : Mercur125A     Build Year : 1962     Contact : Fokt       Location :  Borsec, Romania

Fokt is a member of The Volunteer Fire Brigade in Borsec up in the Transylvanian mountains.

This picturesque town has become well known for Mineral Water and as a Ski resort. The vehicle is nearly 50 years old and still working hard in the community. Air Cooled Rules !

Model : IVECO (whisper)      Build Year : 2007 ?     Contact : Stuart       Location : Germany   de

They can’t forget in Germany ! ( Stuart wont let them )

Latest pics from Stuart in Germany .

He works as an hgv fitter in the Ulm factory.

The current IVECO flagship ‘Stralis’ is built in this ex Magirus Deutz assembly plant. Heres a new 500hp model with those

special extra badges + an even more special number plate.

When he is not working in the factory he maintains a fleet of 11 Iveco trucks for a transport company in his local village.

The parents of the transport company boss were very keen Magirus Deutz operators. Now he cannot forget the company history and has all his current fleet fitted with extra badges to remind everybody of the company heritage.

When Stuart is not in the Ulm factory or servicing the fleet, he finds time to look after Magirus Deutz fire fighting vehicles which serve Hannover Air Force Base.

If he can he is going to get some pictures of these for me to use. That is if he can find the time amongst his truck care activities !

Come on IVECO, give us the engine to match the badge !!

MD number plate - nostalgic !!

Model : 290D26K-232D19K     Build Year : 1974-78       Location : Russian Federation
Andrey has sent me proof that Magirus Deutz really can take it ! These two trucks above have already survived the now famous 'Baikal Amur' contract of the late 70s-early 80s, where they worked in some of the lowest temperatures in the world. Now they must think they are on holiday in a world of tarmac and a more sensible climate. Life begins at 40 they used to say. These trucks are proof.

There were 9131 Maggies on the railway building contract. Where are they all now ??

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Russia really loves their Maggies. They seem to do anything to keep them alive, as the specification

suits the inhospitable conditions that exist in many parts of the country.

Here is a selection of Recycled and Modified models.

Here are two more Maggies from Russia, the younger Green version has an unusual extended cab.

Models : 310D19AK?     Build Year : Unknown     Contact : Chris       Location :  Portugal pt

Chris was recently on a trip to Portugal, and one morning he was enjoying his continental breakfast when he heard the unmistakable sound of a V10 Maggie at work. He then went to Montgenevre in the Alps and found the truck working on a site. Its still got the factory badge layout !

Models : Various      Build Year : Unknown     Contact : Seif       Location :  Tunisia tn

Seif is currently working in Glasgow but found the time to hunt out these pictures which illustrate that Magirus Deutz are well used in Tunisia. Whether they are painted in a very distinctive cactus camouflage or working to rescue people from flooded streets, I am sure the people of Tunisia appreciate their usefullness.

Model : 90 M 7.5 FL      Build Year : 1981-2     Contact : George       Location : Hampshire,  England gb

Gordon is in business in Precision Engineering in Southampton. It is therefore understandable that he operates a Magirus Deutz that is 28 years old, as a testament to fine engineering. The truck now has its own personalised registration number To Crane Goods 2 Ton. If you have a 'Precision Engineering'

need click here for more information.

Model : 290 M 19      Build Year : 1981-2     Contact : Richard     Location : Hampshire,  England gb

Richard and Angela have a mention on world maggies. They recently sent me this picture of their beautiful 290M19 with 290 horsepower from a Deutz BF8L413F and the distinctive optional full cab spoiler. It looks like it is still doing a good job for them even at nearly 30 years old, though not quite as not as old as the AEC Mammoth Major 30T tanker on the back.

I have asked Richard if the Maggie is still regularly working , but I hope it is.

Model : 310D16HS      Build Year : 1973       Location : Germany de

I have been told today that although in the UK the forward control maggies had an 'F' in their code and if it was a normal control(hauber) the 'F' was just left out, in Germany they use an 'H' for hauber !

Oh well you live and learn ? Christian runs this 37 year old V10 2-axle prime mover and trailer in his business. He is also the owner of the Unique 4 axle Maggie on 'restorations' and a great website with nostalgic pictures for truck and construction vehicle fans at www. schueller-tiefbau.de.

Model :  DL25TTL    Build Year : 1958       Location : Valparaiso  Chile   cl

This 52 year old  is still working hard on its important job in Chile. Andres tells me it is officially due for replacement but they dont believe that it is really necessary, and fear a newer vehicle will not be as good. As is usual with Fire engines, it is in truly staggering condition considering its age.

Model : 170D11TLF     Build Year : 1974       Location : Matosinhos, Porto  Portugal   pt

This has to be one of the best preserved 36 year old working fire vehicles I have ever seen. Jose tells me it was working in France until 3 years ago. It is now part of the fleet of Bombeiros Voluntários de Leixões. Look closely at the pictures to see the attention to detail, that is typical of Fire Brigades.

Model : Mercur/Jupiter      Build Year : 1959-'60 ?       Location : Esna  Egypt   eg

Stefano lives in Milan. On a recent Nile Cruise he was surprised to see several old Magirus Deutz still working hard along the banks of the river. I say Magirus Deutz, but actually they may be products of the El Nasr Automotive company, The 'NASCO' company started assembling kits in about 1959 under license from Klockner Humboldt Deutz. He also saw another one working near Aswan. The Bus bodywork has probably been made locally and grafted onto the chassis to suit their requirements.

Model : Various     Build Year : Some Current        Location : Argentina  ar

The Deutz Stallion was in production until 2001, it was made in two models, the 130 with F6L913 and the 150 with the Turbo BF6L913.

Argentina has been quite active in using Deutz engines over the years and even have a factory still producing them under licence.

It is not widely known that there was a manufacturing facility in Argentina where they assembled the 200D16 Rigid and Artic models, and the 200RS bus until the late '70's.

Later on in 1992 they made their own Deutz powered model as shown below.

Dodge Argentina also offered a Deutz engined model, the DD.

Thank you to Esteban for your information. Click HERE to find out much more about the Argentine Magirus Deutz and Deutz history.

The Argentine built FL913 driven Agrale Dynamic The BF6L913 powered Dodge Deutz

Model : 310D26AK     Build Year : 1978     Driver :  Gordon      Location :  Scotland

Gordon is the driver of this fine hard working V10 recovery truck up in the wilds of Scotland.

When it is not on emergency and breakdown work the versatile crane and winches are in demand to lift many types of valuable items with great care and precision, including a replacement engine for the a mighty 500 ton Liebherr mobile crane. This Maggie and Driver team are both hard workers.

Model : 200D16FL     Build Year : 1976    Owner : David Morgan     Location : San Lorenzo, Santa Fe, Argentina  ar

David has this useful truck with a hydraulic crane. It is a very versatile machine and is used on building repair and development projects in Argentina. Yellow is obviously a popular colour in Santa Fe.

Model : 232D16     Build Year : 1975    Owner : Juan & Fabio     Location : Santa Fe, Argentina  ar

The well preserved Yellow truck is owned by Juan Carlos. His friend Fabio owns the Red one. They both operate out of Rosario, Santa Fe in Argentina and are well prepared for hard work featuring Air conditioning and massive front end protection.

Model : S6500 Jupiter     Build Year : 1955-59    Owner : Unknown     Location : Brazil   br

When Rui in Sao Paulo sent me these pictures I saw a model I had never seen before. It looks like a Jupiter, but it has different front wings with twin headlights, a very heavy front bumper and a factory built extended cab. I dont know if the vehicle left Ulm like this or if it has been modified in Brazil, but either way it looks good for its 50+ years. To see more striking looking trucks in Brazil click HERE.

Model : 120-25     Build Year : 1993     Owner : Deutsches Bundesbahn     Location : Hannover , Germany  de
This truck looks like New and is in regular use by the fire division of DB. Stuart sent this picture of this recent visitor to his workshop. Although it is sixteen years old it has only completed 13000 km. At that rate it will be around for many years to come.

Model : 330-25      Build Year : 1985?     Contact : Luke     Location : Yorkshire,  England gb

There are 3 of these up on the Yorkshire Moors. Needless to say they have been very busy recently. I know there are other Deutz powered Snow Ploughs and gritters in many counties. I saw one on the TV working hard at East Midlands Airport, I think ?

Model : 256D26AL     Build Year : 1985?     Operator : Jon     Location : Africa

Jon in Africa sent pictures of this fine looking truck. Its other designation is IVECO Magirus 220-25.

Whatever name it has, it is a Long Wheelbase 6x6 Magirus Deutz chassis. It has been fitted with a hydroseeding unit for revegetation on a mining project in Africa. As the truck below, this is an other situation ... open, wild and demanding but rather than cold and damp, this time hot dry and dusty. Yet another perfect home for a Magirus Deutz. More pics may follow I have been told. Thanks Jon.

Model : 256D26AK     Build Year : 1980?     Driver : Chris & Debbie      Location : Cumbria, England gb

Chris and Debbie Rigg are the proud drivers of these fine trucks. The photographs taken by Thomas clearly show the type of terrain which Maggies like... open, wild and demanding.

Burlington Slate Ltd have quarries near Kirkby-in-Furness in the Lake District. They produce slate of the very highest quality which is used for roofing, flooring and wallcovering on some of the most prestigious projects. This 'many-million year old' natural material is moved around the site by three 256D26AK maggies. The have had their wheelbase extended to accomodate special heavy duty platform bodywork to handle this arduous task. Quality products on Quality trucks.

Model : 232 TLF24/50    Build Year : 1978?     Owner : Karahnjukar Project    Location : Iceland

Petr sent his picture from The Karahnjukar HydroPower Project in Egilsstadhir in Iceland.

The site is enormous and is harnessing the power of some of east Iceland’s great glacial rivers .

It is testament to the quality of the Maggie that an important safety job is entrusted to a vehicle of a 'certain age' . It is also amazing that this is the same model featured on the'fire' page that was working in Africa. Hot or Cold, no problem ! To find out more about this wonderful development in a very inhospitable but beautiful area, click 'here'.

Model : 230D19     Build Year : 1970-72     Owner : Military Fire Brigade     Location : Israel
Joseph in Israel sent pictures of these fine Fire vehicles, still working hard with an important job.

Model : 320D22FS     Build Year : 1980?     Owner : German Air Force     Location : Hannover , Germany  de
This impressive truck is in regular use by the German Air Force in Hannover. It is one of several which are used as kerosene tankers on the base. Its incredible condition is testament to it's high standard of maintenance by Stuart and his colleagues.

Model : 200D19FK     Build Year : 1974     Owner :  Lucas & Maria Laura      Location :  Neuquén, Patagonia, Argentina  ar

Lucas and Maria Laura are the proud owners of this very rare immaculate truck. It is 1 of only 14 ever exported to Argentina and is regularly used on groundworks and other projects in North Patagonia .

Can you believe this truck is 35 years old ? . The pictures were taken in March 2008 !! Amazing.

Model : 310D26AK  and IVECO 330-32ANW     Build Year : 1977-8 ?    From : Matthias      Location : Germany de

These pictures of some heavy duty cranes were sent from the Rheinland by Matthias. The crane units are by Wilhag. The IVECO 330-32ANW below has BF8L513 power and an unusual extended cab.

Model : 232D26AK     Build Year : 1975     Owner :  Svein      Location :  Norway
Contact Information : See and hear this great truck on YouTube HERE

This is the truck I have had on my links page for about a year. What a coincidence .

I would be smiling too, if I owned a truck like this one. Svein's truck is not one of those showpiece trucks which only comes out on sunny days. It goes to work regularly to earn its keep.

See it working below in the sort of conditions it was designed for.

Model : 256D26AK     Build Year : 1978     Owner :  Zoltan      Location :  Hungary
Zoltan's truck is in regular daily operation in Hungary and outperforming other newer trucks !
